Oregon Secretary of State Jeanne Atkins and Oregon Senate President Pro Tempore Diane Rosenbaum (D-Portland) will be the featured speakers at the Oregon AFSCME Women’s Conference, now set for Jan. 22-23 in Salem. The event was originally slated for September but had to be rescheduled.
Sponsored by the Council 75 Women’s Committee and to be held at the Salem AFSCME office, registration is limited to the first 90 people. A registration form is attached to this article. The conference cost is $25 for AFSCME members; members of other unions are also welcome to attend, their registration cost is $50. Hotel rooms are available, or you have the option of sleeping over at the union hall; see the registration form for details.
Women’s Committee member Denise Choin of Local 3241 (OEM) says the event will be a combination conference and training session. There will be a focus on how women can best flex their political muscle as well as AFSCME Strong training, as well as social times and the two speakers.
Atkins was appointed Secretary of State in March when sitting SOS Kate Brown ascended to the governor’s office. She has a long political history, including time with Jeff Merkley back when he was in the Oregon Legislature and then later after he was elected to the U.S. Senate.
Rosenbaum served in the Oregon House beginning in 1998, and has been in the state senate since 2008. She was the Senate Majority Leader from 2010 until her recent election by her colleagues as Senate President Pro Tempore, essentially No. 2 in the pecking order in Oregon's upper chamber behind President Peter Courtney (D-Salem). She is a long-time staffer for the Communications Workers of America and a former lobbyist.
You can e-mail Women’s Committee Chair Theresia Lloyd-Siemer if you have any questions.
